Simple syrup is a staple in many cocktails and alcoholic drinks. But you may not know that there are many other uses! It can be used to sweeten tea and coffee (hot or cold), drizzled over fruit salad or unsweetened yogurt, and can be added breakfast cereals such as oatmeal. We always have a bottle of it in the fridge.
Simple Syrup is EXACTLY what its name implies: simple. It’s super easy to make, takes about 10 minutes, and lasts in the fridge for 1-2 months! We like to store them in squeeze bottles like these (they’re dishwasher safe, there’s not a small cap to misplace and I don’t ever recall them leaking at any point).
Simple Syrup

- Bring the sugar to a boil and let simmer for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Remove from the heat and let cool.
- Store in a plastic squeeze bottle, mason jar, or other air-tight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 months.
Notes:
This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled depending on how much you want to make!
Mint Simple Syrup takes a little more time to make, but only because the mint needs to steep. My husband loves this for his Mint Juleps, and it’s great added to a Mojito or some iced tea!
Mint Simple Syrup
Ingredients
- 1 C water
- 1 C white sugar
- 1 handful mint (about 12 - 15 leaves)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 C water and 1 C sugar over medium-high, whisking sugar to dissolve.
- Bring the sugar to a boil and let simmer for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Remove from the heat.
- Wash the mint leaves and crush them in your fist to bruise them a little; this releases some of the oils and flavor.
- Place the mint into the simple syrup mixture and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let the leaves steep for 2 - 12 hours.
- Remove the leaves and store mint simple syrup in a plastic squeeze bottle, mason jar, or other air-tight container in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 months.
Simple syrup can be infused with a number of other ingredients such as cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, and fruit!
