Mulled Wine

Fall has pretty much come and gone here in Michigan and winter has been knocking on the door. Thankfully, warm winter drinks are here to stay, and I’ve got a winner for you! All you need is a few simple ingredients, which are easily doubled or tripled for a holiday party, or left as is for a cozy winter night at home.
This recipe is very similar to something called Gluhwein, a German mulled wine that is traditionally served around the holidays.

Mulled Wine
A lovely warm drink to serve at your next holiday party or to enjoy on a chilly winter night! Please enjoy responsibly.

Ingredients
- 1 bottle red wine, any kind (better if on the dry side than the sweet side)
- 1 orange
- 15 cloves
- 4 star anise
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 C demerara sugar (alternatively, brown sugar or coarse white sugar)
Instructions
- Empty the bottle of wine into a large sauce pan and warm over medium heat.
- Add the 1/2 C sugar whisking until completely dissolved in the warm wine.
- Wash the orange and slice into rounds. Slice the rounds in half (optional) and place into the sauce pan, along with the 4 star anise, 15 cloves, and 2 cinnamon sticks.
- Allow to simmer for 20 minutes to 1 hour, then reduce heat to low.
- Ladle a serving into your favorite mug or wine glass. Serve with an orange slice and a star anise if you like a little garnish.
- Let cool about 5 minutes before drinking. Enjoy responsibly!
