After a hot and rainy summer, it’s finally starting to feel like fall in Michigan. The temperature is dropping, the leaves are falling, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and the cider mills are open.
Nothing like a newly baked cider-mill donut with a fresh glass of apple cider. But what if the donuts are gone, you’ve got a bunch of cider left and you want something warm to satisfy you? Here’s the answer: hot apple cider.
My mom always had a pot of this on the stove come Thanksgiving or Christmas; it was always a crowd pleaser and made the house smell heavenly.

- 1 medium-sized orange (or 1/2 C orange juice)
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 4 star anise
- 6 cloves

- If using, slice the orange into thick rounds.
- In a small saucepan, combine the 4 C apple cider, orange slices (or 1/2 C orange juice), 3 cinnamon sticks, 4 star anise, and 6 cloves.
- Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce to low and let heat for 30+ minutes.
- Serve hot, garnishing with a cinnamon stick, fresh cranberries, and/or star anise if you wish.
- Enjoy!
You can add cranberries, allspice, cardamom or a dash of nutmeg to your cider too. If you want something a little stronger, try adding some cinnamon-flavored liquor or spiced rum, and enjoy that cider responsibly!
